If you have landscape lights, you know just how dark it seems if they go off. Once captivating scenery for the eyes turns pitch-black, creating a less attractive (and secure) environment. If you’re having problems with your landscape lights not working, there are a handful of reasons that could be the case. Let’s cover 3 of the most common reasons your landscape lights aren’t on.
Faulty Transformer Timer
Low-voltage landscape lighting systems are powered by a transformer that steps the voltage down to 12 volts. These transformers are turned on and off automatically using either a light sensor, timer, or combination of the two. One of the primary causes of landscape lights not working is a faulty timer. These timers can be either digital or analog, which often use physical pins on a rotating dial that trips the timer on and off. Usually, the dial begins losing time, if not stopping altogether. Unfortunately, this is a very common problem, even new out of the box. So, don’t be surprised if your new timer still doesn’t work.
A better alternative today is a Bluetooth-based timer that syncs with an app on your phone. These have proven to be far more reliable for my customers.
Faulty Light Sensor
Another common reason landscape lights stop working is a faulty light sensor. This sensor is usually plugged into the transformer that powers the system, but sometimes they’re integrated into the transformer itself. If it’s the plug-in kind, the solution is a simple swap with a new sensor. However, if the sensor is build into the transformer, you’ll need to replace the transformer entirely. One money-saving alternative is to use an external timer that the transformer can be plugged into.
Severed Low Voltage Wiring
When your transformer is turned on but your lights still don’t light up, one of the primary causes is having a severed wire. Sometimes, all it takes is a tiny cut in the wire that slowly becomes corroded with time. These issues can be frustrating to track down and repair when you have hundreds of feet of low voltage lighting wire. However, not fixing these issues could lead to fires in your landscaping, as the wiring short can generate heat even if the lights aren’t coming on. It’s smart to get the issue checked out immediately if you notice a sudden loss of power to numerous landscape light fixtures.
